Heavy Rains Lead to Swift Water Rescues

The showers from this past weekend caused flooding in several areas which also led to swift water rescues.

One rescue occurred Saturday in Christian County. Sheriff Brad Cole tells Ozarks First that the rescue occurred at the Delaware Town Access Point of the James River. Cole said that four kayakers got caught in the swift current when their raft overturned and while one made it to shore, the other three had to hold onto a log until first responders could arrive to get them to safety. Cole said several agencies including the Missouri Department of Conservation assisted in the rescue.

The heavy rains caused many rivers in the region to rise and the James River was one of several that had flood warnings issued for part of the waterway over the weekend.

Several other area agencies were involved in water rescues during the periods of heavy rains. Ozarks First also reports a water rescue in Douglas County on Friday when two women and a baby were rescued out of a van that had been swept off of a bridge between Cowskin and Prarie Creeks near Goodhope,

Douglas County Sheriff Chris Degase said several agencies helped including the Goodhope Fire Department, Missouri State Highway and Water Patrol, Missouri Conservation, Ava Rural Fire Protection District, Ava City Fire Department, Ava Police Department, and several volunteer firefighters, in addition to several regular pedestrians who saw the danger and jumped in to help.
