Republicans on the Missouri Legislative Review Committee passed a substitute bill last week that would repeal legal protections originally established in Proposition A for earned paid sick leave.
Advocates of the bill say that it will allow businesses to govern their own sick leave policies without influence from the state.
While the new state minimum wage provisions of Proposition A remain in place under the bill, the sponsor, Republican Representative from Belton Sherri Gallick, tells the Missouri News Network that some of the guidelines are too risky for businesses. For example, Gallick says one issue is that employees are not required to tell their employers that they aren't coming in and employers can't ask the question.
The Legislative Review Committee’s action moves the bill to the full House for consideration.
