Efforts to change voter-approved paid sick leave laws are gaining momentum in Jefferson City.
A House bill striking all language for required paid sick leave passed out of a Senate committee Monday.
Right now, businesses that don’t already offer it will be required to start rolling out paid leave starting May first.
If lawmakers want to stop that, senators have to get the bill passed before the end of this month and amend the bill to go into effect early.
The bill’s sponsor, Belton Republican Representative Sherri Gallick, tell the Missouri News Network, that she isn’t sure if it’s possible, but she argues it’s the best way to soften what she sees as an incoming economic blow.
“I don't want to take anything from anyone. I want to try to make as much money as I can. I want people to have great benefits. My worry is the economic impact of this", Gallick says.
The state supreme court is also debating the issue. Their ruling is expected in the coming weeks.
