Wednesday May 7th is the first day for the new National Real ID Law to take effect.
That means anyone who wishes to fly domestically within the United States or enter certain federal facilities, will need to have the id, which is in the same form as a Drivers License but with a star indicating Real ID. The new requirements will include providing documents that will show a person's Identity and Lawful Status, and include information like Social Security Number and Proof of Residence.
During a recent interview on KRZK's "Ozarks Now" Program, FOX Radio News Reporter Tonya J Powers said the law, first passed in 2005, has faced many delays, the latest being the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020 which was the last deadline date for implementation, She added that other delays over the year's involved getting all of the states up and going through different procedures. The law itself was a response to increase security traveling by air and entering federal buildings after the 9-11 and other terrorist attacks.
According to a recent Ozarks First Report, only 46% of Missourians have a Real ID issued to them. While some states have wider requirements for Real ID, Missouri is not one of those so current driver's license will still be good for other areas needing proof of identity.
In a recent story posted by KTLO, some revenue offices in Arkansas will be open extra hours leading up to the Real ID Deadline.
