A group's on-going efforts to pass a tax relief bill for senior's in the state of Missouri takes another step forward after a bill passed on the final day of the 2024 Legislative Session.
Senate Bill 756 is clarification legislation for last year's Senate Bill 190, which deals with potential Real Estate Tax Freezes for Seniors across the state. Senate Bill 190, which was signed into law by Governor Mike Parson last year, would allow a freeze of Real Estate Taxes for Seniors, but left the implementation to County Officials. While the Clarification Bill does leave that in place, it does clarify some eligibility requirements for the freeze.
Taney County Resident Josh Smith has been advocating for the bill locally, and during an interview Friday on the "Ozarks Now" Facebook page, said that while he has collected the needed signatures to qualify to be on the ballot, the Taney County Commission has not elected to do so to this point. Smith said that if the Governor signs the new bill, they may need to start again but that he would continue conversations with the Commission about possible putting a County Ordinance to enact the law or get another round of signatures to qualify again for the ballot.
