Some Missouri lawmakers are trying to bring abortion back into the current conversation.
Missouri Republican legislators desire to put the issue back on the ballot with the goal of intensifying the laws connected to it, according to the Missouri News Network. They've got a bill to do just that. That's three months after Missouri voters already made their voices heard on the issue.
The soonest the ballot referendum could appear on statewide ballots is next year. The idea behind it is essentially to undo what was done last year.
The bill would bring the state back to the reproductive rules it had prior to 2024. That includes no abortions allowed, except for medical emergencies, rape, incest, or fetal anomaly.
Additionally, the resolution also proposes a ban of hormone-blocking drugs for people under the age of 18. Abortion Action Missouri Executive Director Mallory Schwarz made her thoughts known in a testimony with other abortion rights advocates Tuesday. They argued that the resolution takes power from voters.
Schwarz said that "with all of these folks from around the state, we want Missourians to know that we will not stop fighting these attacks and fighting for the protection that we just enshrined in the Constitution. "
