SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Ozarks region is once again on a proposed map for passenger train service. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has announced it’s studying multiple potential new Amtrak routes across the country.
One of the many potential long-distance services being looked at by the FRA would connect New York City, Saint Louis, and Texas by way of Springfield and Tulsa. A map provided by the FRA shows the service would operate on BNSF Railway lines roughly paralleling I-44 from Saint Louis through Springfield, to Tulsa and Dallas/Fort Worth. The FRA is currently taking public comment about its newest proposal. A timeline and funding for the potential services have yet to be announced.
The announcement comes just months after the State of Missouri found out it wasn’t receiving federal money to study a potential route linking Springfield with Kansas City. In September 2023, the Missouri Department of Transportation applied for $500,000 as part of the Federal Railroad Administration’s Corridor ID program. Despite not being awarded the money, MoDOT stated it would continue looking for money to study service to Springfield.
