A law that was passed two decades ago is about to finally go into effect.
In 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Law which was in part a response to the 911 Terrorist Attacks requiring a higher level of proof of citizenship and status in the country. The implementation of the law has faced many delays but on May 7th, just a few days before the 20th Anniversary of the signing of the bill by then President George W. Bush, the law will take effect.
That means anyone who wishes to fly domestically within the United States or enter certain federal facilities, will need to have the id, which is in the same form as a Drivers License but with a star indicating Real ID.
The new requirements will include providing documents that will show a person's Identity and Lawful Status, and include information like Social Security Number and Proof of Residence.
A link to more information including specific details for Arkansas and Missouri residents can be found on the Department of Homeland Security Website while a story about the impact of the new law at the Springfield-Branson Airport can be found on the Ozarks First Website.
