Thinking about blood donation? Here are some quick facts

Do you understand what is involved in donating blood? Have fears or questions kept you from donating in the past? Here are some facts.

If you didn’t know, a typical blood donation is about a pint or 8% of a body’s total blood volume. But the human body is an amazing machine. It replaces the lost blood in 24 to 48 hours and replenishes red blood cells in 10 to 12 weeks.

A typical donation takes about 10 minutes. And just one donation can save up to three lives. Every year about 4.5 million lives are saved by blood transfusions. The need remains great and CBCO says it needs more than 60,000 donations each year to meet local transfusion needs.

Good news here; you don’t have to know your blood type to donate. CBCO will determine your blood type when you donate. Of course, you may have questions about health issues that could determine donor eligibility. The CBCO website is a wealth of that type of information.
