Waterways Continue to be Dangerous with More Rain on the Way

With several days of rain in the forecast, area waterways will continue to be dangerous for people wanting to get on the rivers.

Makalya Leppert is one of the Christian County Agents for the Missouri Department of Conservation, and on a recent edition of the “At Your Service” podcast, she talked about one of the over half dozen water rescues that have taken place in the region. Leppert said she had advised some kayakers not to put in at the James River because of dangerous water conditions. They decided to go anyway and over an hour later, had to be rescued when they kayak overturned. Leppert said the strength of the current can’t be seen from the surface and it is easier than people think to get caught and not be able to get out, even for experienced floaters and swimmers.

Leppert also warned of the dangers of driving through low water crossings when the water is over the road. She said it can be more difficult to judge over the road, especially at night, but knowing where the low water crossings are and being extra cautious is advised. Several vehicles have been swept into creeks over the last few days. Most have ended with the people being rescued however a man from Ozark County is still missing after his vehicle got swept off of a bridge early Wednesday morning.

The conversation with Makalya Leppert on water safety is part of this week's Conservation Report that can be heard on the Branson Podcast Network.
