What caused the Northern Lights to be visible?

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – From San Antonio, Texas to Florida, breathtaking Northern Lights were streaking across the sky over the weekend. The geomagnetic storm that caused the aurora borealis to be visible has calmed, leaving no chance of seeing the phenomena in the immediate future.

On Friday, the United States went under a rare Geomagnetic Storm Watch. By Friday evening, we experienced a level G5 storm, the strongest on the scale. The Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s) from the sun brought beautiful reds, purples, greens and blues to the most southern parts of the U.S.

As of noon on Monday, May 13, the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center says we are forecast to be at a level G1.
