The storm that has been the focus of weather forecasters over the last several days finally arrives in the Lakes Region.
The storm, named Kingston by the National Weather Service, is predicted to dump up to a foot of snow in parts of the Lakes Region with localized higher amounts possible.
The main line of snow showers will start overtaking the Lakes Region mid to late morning with roads getting snow covered quickly.
The latest projections for snow amounts show the Missouri Lakes Region could see 8 to 12 inches of snow with areas around the Lakes along the Missouri-Arkansas boarder possible seeing higher amounts. Just south of there on a Eureka Springs-Harrison-Mountain Home line, amounts are expected to be 6 to 8 inches. Areas south of that line are projected at 4 to 6 inches of snow with higher amounts possible in the higher elevations.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly once the heavy snow begins. Randy Luna and Corey Taylor of Storm Dar Weather, during an interview on KRZK’s “Ozarks Now” program Monday, advises once the heavy snow begin, it is best to be at the very least heading to your destination and not plan to travel for the next couple of days.
Most schools have already cancelled classes for today and many government buildings have announced closing or shortened hours of operation.
Snow is forecast to end late tonight to be followed by extremely cold temperatures with wind chills in the below zero. The Winter Storm Warning continues through the day to be followed by an Extreme Cold Advisory over the next two days.
