Winter Weather Moves Through, National Guard Activated in Missouri

A cold front is moving through the region this morning and with it, bringing a possibility of a wintry mix changing to all snow by this afternoon, strong northwest winds, and recording breaking wind chills.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning for all of the Lakes Region. The Advisory runs through Saturday morning in Missouri and through Friday morning in Arkansas. Some areas could see 30 below zero wind chills during this period. Also, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect with mixed precipitation changing to all snow this afternoon.
National Weather Service Forecaster Justin Titus in a recent interview on KRZK’s “Ozarks Now” program said the biggest concern will be wind chill, as the winds will gust to over 40 MPH dropping wind chill readings in the 20 to 30 below range. That with blowing snow could make for near blizzard conditions today.

While most schools in the Lakes Region are already out for Christmas Break, other schools were planning to have their final day of classes today. Many of those schools have already called off classes. Several businesses and attractions, including Silver Dollar City, has already announced they will not open today.

A listing of cancellations and a place for businesses to submit closures can be found on the home page of this website.

Meanwhile, Missouri Governor Mike Parson is activating the National Guard to help with state and local response efforts during the winter storm.  The National Guard will help the Highway Patrol by responding to stranded drivers and clearing roadways.

Officials are urging people to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary and if stranded on a roadway to stay in their vehicle and call for help and to put together a Winter Weather Survival kit in case they are stranded for a longer period of time.
