Women injured in coaster incident file federal lawsuit

A $50 million federal lawsuit has been filed by two women injured on November 2, 2024 in an accident on the Copperhead Mountain Coaster at Shepherd of the Hills Adventure Park.

The two women involved in the incident, Kinda Renfro and Debra Rhodes, are making multiple accusations of negligence on the part of Shepherd and its staff which they say led to serious injuries when they fell off the ride while making a turn about six feet off the ground.

According to the lawsuit, the two women were weighed before they rode the ride and combined were under the maximum weight of 325 pounds for the cart. The suit shows the coaster’s policy at the time of the accident as the maximum weight in dry conditions is 325 pounds, while 280 pounds in wet conditions. The suit also claims the attraction’s safety instructions stated anyone 16 years old or older could not be a passenger, meaning the employees operating the ride allegedly ignored the ride’s policies to appease the desires of the plaintiffs to ride together.
