As the Major League Baseball Season ended on Wednesday, organizations began to announce changes.
The Kansas City Royals fired Manager Mike Matheny and Pitching Coach Cal Eldred shortly after the teams final game, a 9-2 loss in Cleveland to the playoff bound Guardians.
Matheny had taken over the team in 2020 following the retirement of Ned Yost, who had led the team to the World Series Title in 2015. The firing continues a shake-up started by owner John Sherman in September when he fired Front Office Executive Dayton Moore who had built the organization up leading to the World Series title but had fallen back over the last several years.
Matheny, who previously managed the St. Louis Cardinals, led the team to improved seasons in 2020 and 2021 before falling back into last place in the American League Central Division this season.
