Hollis Maloy Matthews, age 89, of Cassville, Missouri passed away Thursday, September 29, 2022 at Mercy Hospital Cassville in Cassville, Missouri.
He was born February 24, 1933 at Mineral Springs in Barry County, Missouri. On November 24, 1954 at Mineral Springs, he was united in marriage to Mary Amanda Stockton, who preceded him in death on January 20, 2015. On September 25, 2015 in Lawrence County, Missouri he was united in marriage to Geneva Marler, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Rick Matthews of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Debra Smith and her husband Sam of Sarcoxie, Missouri and Kimberly Washam and her husband Wayne of Cassville, Missouri; one stepdaughter, Shirl Ann Shannon and her husband Charles of Mt. Vernon, Missouri; one brother, Ted Matthews and his wife Becky of Cassville, Missouri; four grandchildren, Dusty, Derek, Olivia and Belle and four great grandchildren, Kallie, Jax, Donte and Charlotte.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Mary; one brother, Bill; an infant sister, Flossie May; two nieces, Robin and Tracy Matthews and daughter-in-law, Glenette Matthews.
Hollis grew up and attended school at Mineral Springs. After school he traveled to California working in the wheat fields, orchards and at the grain elevators while at times sleeping in his vehicle. After returning to this area, he moved to the Kansas City - St. Joe, Missouri area where he was employed by a gunstock manufacturer as a foreman. In 1971 he returned to Cassville where he raised cattle and later in life raised a few buffalo and watusi cattle. Hollis had his pilot license and enjoyed flying and traveling. He was a talented artist drawing landscapes, making miniature 1800’s general store fronts and barns made of old scrap wood. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Carthage, Missouri and attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Cassville.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Mineral Springs Cemetery in Cassville, Missouri, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville. Pastor Derek Smith will conduct the services.
