Hubert Ginn “Hugh” Barnes, Jr.

Hubert Ginn “Hugh” Barnes, Jr., 78.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and son.  Hubert Ginn “Hugh” Barnes, Jr. passed away suddenly in his sleep August 29th, 2024 at the age of 78 in Roseburg, Oregon while he was preparing to attend the funeral of his son Steve, who died the day before.

Hugh was born December 18, 1945 in the family home of his mother in Gifford, South Carolina.  He was the son of Hubert Ginn Barnes, Sr and Wahlita Alicia Stone Barnes.  He grew up in Florida sharing time in Jacksonville and Apopka, Florida.  He graduated from Andrew Jackson High School and then entered service in Naval Air.  Hugh was a mechanic and rescue air crewman aboard the USS Midway and aboard USS Staten Island, an ice breaker that took him to Antarctica.

While stationed at Imperial Beach Naval Air Field, California he met and married the love of his life Diane Elaine Ellis on May 14, 1966.  The goal of his life was to be a good husband and father, vowing to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table, and all the milk to drink that was wanted.

He is survived by his wife, Diane of Branson Missouri, and his children:  Heather Barnes, wife of deceased son Steve,  Kenneth Barnes and his wife Mendy of Atlanta Georgia, Irma (Lisa) Allphin and her husband Owen of Bentonville, Arkansas, Deborah Grimmer and her husband Jared currently residing in England, David Barnes and his wife, Mindy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Christopher Barnes of Forsyth, Missouri, Aliona Wright and her husband Jeff of Halltown, Missouri, Maria Dutton of Branson, Missouri, Irina Nothum and her husband Bradly of Springfield, Missouri, and Daniel Barnes of Springfield, Missouri.  Hugh had 49 Grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.  He was also survived by his sisters:  Harriet Bremer and Suzi Sasser and her husband, John, and Harriet Bremer both from Florida.

Hugh was an Aircraft Mechanic, Master Carpenter, Furniture Builder (Antique Oak Creations), and Custom Home Contractor.  He received a Bachelor degree in business: marketing and management from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri where he attended school with a number of his sons and son-in-laws.

The purpose and aim of his life was always centered on becoming a good husband and parent.  He loved teaching practical skills and matching up silly songs or rhymes.  His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the joy of his life.  As his successful children moved to various parts of the world he became the “adopted” grandparent to kids in the neighborhood.

He loved Jesus Christ and studied scriptures daily.  He felt blessed to be a member of the Branson West Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  He endeavored to be kind, generous and loving to members of his church family and neighbors in addition to his kids.  He looked forward to being reunited with family on the other side of the veil.

He will be missed but never forgotten.

Services will be Saturday, September 7, 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 9113 State Hwy 76, Branson West, MO 65737.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 am with the funeral to follow at 11:00 am in the church with full military honors.  Burial will be at a later date in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield.  Services are in the care of Snapp-Bearden Funeral Home & Crematory, Branson.
