John Jay Elwood, age 61, of Hollister, Missouri
John Jay Elwood, age 61, of Hollister, Missouri, passed away July 7, 2023. He entered this life February 16, 1962, the son of Vernon “Jack” and Joan (Matthies) Elwood in Rapid City, South Dakota.
With skilled hands, John was a fantastic mechanic, he designed and built many custom motorcycles. John customized a Greyhound Bus that became his home on wheels. He painted it Harley Davidson black and Orange, of course! He loved attending bike rallies, traveling, and fixing anything and everything. John had a lot of difficulties in life, yet he was one to keep pushing through. He overcame many obstacles including learning disabilities and addiction. John was gruff in his mannerisms but had a big heart. He was a friend to those in need. Everything John did, he learned on his own, working on cars and bikes, fixing anything electrical, construction work. He was not a quitter and never gave up! He always found a way to make things work. John has many friends throughout the country. He was fiercely loyal to those he loved. He was a big brother to people that needed help and understanding. His little sister loved him and was very proud of him, and he has left a big hole in many hearts.
John is survived by sister, Lea Moore of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Cody Hartness of Charleston, South Carolina; daughter, Tony Hartness of Boise, Idaho; and two grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and several siblings.
